Oscar buzz for ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ after first Hollywood screening

Mary Poppins Returns is shaping up to be an awards contender if the early reactions coming out of Hollywood are to be believed, with Emily Blunt tipped to receive her first ever Oscar nomination.

The musical sequel, starring Blunt in the title role, held screenings for tastemakers and academy voters over the last week where it was met with rapturous responses and standing ovations.

The long-awaited sequel to 1964’s Mary Poppins hits cinemas this Christmas, and Disney is hoping to repeat the awards success of the original which earned 13 Academy Award nominations and won 5.

Industry paper Variety hailed Returns as “a bona fide best picture Oscar player this year” citing a “applause throughout a Producers Guild screening on Wednesday” and a “lengthy standing ovation” for the cast and crew at an “all-guild” screening on Saturday.

The film has been praised for giving Oscar voters some much-needed respite from the hard-hitting issues tackled by other big contenders like A Star Is Born and Vice.

“Mary Poppins Returns will be a massive hit,” sums up Variety’s Kristopher Taply, “which will drive the point home all the more: Audiences want a movie like this right now. Critics, even the most cynical of them (whether they admit it or not), want a movie like this right now.”

The original film is considered Walt Disney’s crowning achievement earning 13 Oscar nominations – the most any Walt Disney Studios has ever received – including the only Best Picture nomination producer Disney received in his lifetime. The film won 5 of those Oscars, including Best Actress for Julie Andrews in her feature film debut.

Emily Blunt is being tipped to repeat Andrews’ success with Indiewire’s Bill Desowitz saying the British A Quiet Place star “portrays the iconic nanny with such confidence and charm that she could land a Best Actress Oscar nomination”.

Awards prognosticator Gregory Ellwood of the The Playlist concurs saying Blunt “is absolutely superb and her performance puts her smack dab in the middle of the Best Actress race”. Ellwood cites Olivia Colman (The Favourite) and Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born) as Blunt’s biggest rivals for the gold trophy that will be handed out on 28 February, 2019.

Early reactions suggest the film could also do well in the craft categories, with nominations expected to land for costumes, production design, and of course – the music.

Meryl Streep has also been given an outside chance of bagging a Best Supporting Actress nomination playing Topsy Turvy, but then it doesn’t take much for Streep to get a nod, does it?

Mary Poppins Returns hits cinemas on 21 December, 2018. Watch a trailer below.

Liddell-Ortiz 3 Was More Than Enough Closure For A Classic MMA Rivalry

liddell ortiz

What did we watch Saturday night when Tito Ortiz faced Chuck Liddell at The Forum outside of Los Angeles? Was it two MMA legends legitimately renewing a 14-year rivalry? Or was it two past-their-prime fighters looking to make a quick buck?

Father time remains undefeated

Liddell, 48, looked fantastic for a dad but slow and plodding for a former UFC champion who is one of the baddest men ever to ever step into a cage. Ortiz, no spring chicken at 43, knocked out Liddell at 4:24 of the first round in the light heavyweight bout.

It’s not uncommon for mixed martial artists to fight into their 40s. Former greats such as Randy Couture and Dan Henderson successfully fought past the age of 45. Current UFC light-heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier is less than four months shy of 40. It’s not always the miles on the car. It’s how many accidents the car has been in.

Liddell’s career highlight reel of knockouts drew everyone in. His trademark tornado-like flurry of punches is ingrained in MMA fans’ minds. Now, those great memories of “The Iceman” are drifting further and further away. He’s lost four fights in a row, all via knockout. His greatest strength has become his greatest weakness: standing toe-to-toe and recklessly brawling. It’s never easy to see a legend in any sport go out on their heels.

Ortiz, on the other hand, makes out like a fat rat. A man who’s on the Mount Rushmore of all-time disliked fighters got the win over his career rival in the most conclusive way possible. It was the first knockout in more than 12 years for Ortiz, a notorious wrestle-first fighter. “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” stressed over and over his confidence going into the fight, and it showed in the game plan. He did not attempt a single takedown. Ortiz methodically stalked Liddell until he landed a big right hand on The Iceman’s chin.

What’s next for the two MMA legends?

Following his last fight in UFC in June 2010, Liddell was employed by the promotion as a front office executive. Along with former UFC champ Matt Hughes, he was let go when UFC was sold to WME-IMG in 2016.

The Iceman was left with a lot more time on his hands. He’s consistently in the gym working with younger fighters. He’s also living a much healthier lifestyle than he was in his heyday; Liddell battled alcohol abuse throughout his UFC career. Liddell’s return to the cage Saturday is part of the fallout from leaving UFC. “Just kinda trying to figure what I want to do, I look at it as a blessing in disguise. It’s got me re-motivated to go out and find what I really want to do,” Liddell said on The MMA Hour in 2017.

Liddell is now in the same position as he was two years ago: defeated, unemployed, and with time to kill.

Philippine cage legends inspire Gilas for FIBA World Cup home stand

On the eve of a crucial home stand that could punch the Philippines’ ticket to the next round of the qualifiers for the 2019 FIBA World, Cup, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas brought out of some of the most illustrious names in Philippine basketball to inspire the current generation of national players at the Meralco Multi-Purpose Hall.

The Philippines plays Kazakhstan on November 30 and Iran on December 3, both at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

“When Filipino basketball fans speak of Olympic honor, of Olympic prestige, indeed of Olympic tradition, we cast our eyes to the distant past,” said SBP President Al Panlilio. “We are in the company of 10 great players who know the story of what made our basketball past great.”

Among the past Philippine Olympians present were Rafael Hechanova (1952 Helsinki); Antonio Genato (1952 Helsinki and 1956 Melbourne); Caloy Loyzaga (1952 Helsinki and 1956 Melbourne), who was represented by his eldest son Chito; Kurt Bachmann (1960 Rome), who was represented by his son Dicky; Edgardo Roque (1960 Rome); Arturo Valenzona (1964 Tokyo); Jimmy Mariano (1968 Rome); Marte Samson (1972 Munich); and Manny Paner (1972 Munich).

The Philippines competed in seven Summer Olympics.

“The objective today is not to measure the success of one team or one generation over the other, but to share stories and strands of commitment, patriotism and pride,” added Panlilio.

“We are on the eve of a war that may well spell whether the Philippines will advance to the next phase of the FIBA World Cup. Today’s reunion with the basketball legends reinforces our belief in the Gilas Pilipinas team to play at its best to achieve its goals, whatever the odds, whatever the cost.”

Added SBP Executive Director Renauld “Sonny” Barrios: “This is a golden opportunity for these Philippine basketball legends to share their experiences and to give inspirational messages to our current Gilas Pilpinas players. Not many people get this opportunity to be with greatness and we hope it rubs off on our players.”

“We thank the SBP for the honor of recognition and that they reached out to the past basketball players to offer words of advice to our national players,” said Robert Jaworksi.

“Malaking bagay na mga idol natin nag-pave ng way para sa atin,” said balik-Gilas player LA Tenorio.

“Make the most of this opportunity,” implored Genato to Gilas Pilipinas. “I believe you will win.”

“This is a wonderful send-off for our national team,” said Gilas head coach Yeng Guiao. “Meron tayong kasabihan na, ‘ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makakarating sa pinaroroonan.’ To be in this room with all these basketball legends is a good opportunity to learn from our past to aspire for our future. We should link up with our past to link up with our present to go to our future.”

WATCH: The first trailer for Artemis Fowl is here

Back in 2017 fans were thrilled after it was announced that science fiction novel series Artemis Fowl would be adapted into a live-action film by Disney.

The books which were written by Irish author Eoin Colfer have been massively popular among readers both at home and abroad.

Talks of a film adaptation have circulated extensively in the past with the filming being stuck in development hell for years since 2001.

Hollywood heavyweight Kenneth Branagh who was behind past epics such as Thor and the live-action Cinderella remake was hired to direct the film.

It seems Disney has managed to get things properly on track as they have finally dropped the first trailer for the film today and it looks pretty interesting.

While a lot of the traditional humour synonymous with the books is absent from the trailer there’s certainly a lot for us to feast our eyes on.

Along with some impressive visuals, we also get our first look at Kilkenny actor Ferdia Shaw as the titular character.

The trailer also features Judi Dench’s voiceover as Commander Root, the leader of the reconnaissance division of fairy police force LEPrecon, a gender-swapped role from the original book series.

Other notable co-stars set to appear in the adaptation include   Josh Gad as kleptomaniac dwarf Mulch Diggums, Lara McDonnell as feisty, spirited elf Captain Holly Short, who is kidnapped by Artemis for a ransom of fairy gold, and Miranda Raison as Artemis Fowl’s mother Angeline.

SRK can’t afford Gauri Khan on board for films

Shah Rukh Khan says that he cannot afford to get his interior decorator and producer wife Gauri Khan on board to design for films. “We make really small films. We can’t afford to get her on board for our films,” the actor said. His comments came after Gauri said, “Right now, I am very busy. My hands are full and whenever I will have time then, 100 per cent I will do it.”

The husband and wife were interacting with the media at the inauguration of Sanchos — a Mexican restaurant designed by Gauri. “I just go to whichever restaurant she opens because I get free meal, so it’s really good for me… I hope she keeps opening up new restaurants so that all of us can keep coming here to do parties,” said Shah Rukh.

Apart from designing restaurants and office spaces, Gauri has also designed the homes of Bollywood celebrities like Ranbir Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra, Karan Johar and Jacqueline Fernandez among many others.

Gauri doesn’t have time for Shah Rukh

It’s a known fact that Gauri Khan is an ace interior designer. Her official Instagram is filled with pictures of her beautiful designs. And in fact, many celebs have visited her store Gauri Khan Designs, pictures of which have garnered a lot of buzz on the internet. Last week, she put up a picture of a Bollywood based beauty brand store she designed. Impressed by his wife Gauri’s craft, Shah Rukh liked the picture and asked when will she design his office. He wrote, “When are you designing my office?” Gauri Khan’s hilariously amusing response proved that she is indeed Queen to King Khan.

She wrote, “As soon as I have some free time…” Well, Shah Rukh Khan may be the King of wits and humour but Gauri isn’t far behind. We wonder what Shah Rukh Khan
